Sparta will play Europa League
Sparta had a difficult task in the second leg against Monaco. Spartans lost 0-2 to AS in the first leg in Prague. They had to score two more goals than Monaco to equal the total score of two legged-tie. Everything important has happened in the second half. Monaco scored two goals within five minutes and went into a lead 2-0. Sparta tried to dramatize this match while Karlsson scored a contact goal. However, the home team added one more goal. The successful scorers for AS were Gelson, Golovin, and Diop.
Sparta's head coach Pavel Vrba had to make a few changes in his line-up. Due to different reasons, he could not count with Juliš, Krejčí, LK37, Højer, Čelůstka and also a captain of the team Bořek Dočkal. On the other hand, Niko Kovač made only one change in comparison to the first match. Sidibe got a chance as a right-back instead of Aguilar.
Spartans started this match very actively with high attacking. The first interesting moment came in the 14th minute when Sparta was attacking Nübel who made a mistake but Spartans during over-numbering did not create a dangerous chance.
A home team made the first trouble in front of Nita two minutes later, but the Romanian goalkeeper boxed out Gelson's ball heading to the goal.
The first clear goal chance came after Sparta's loss in the middle of the pitch in the 21st minute when Volland went alone to Nita from a counter-attack. However, he made an excellent reflexive save and hit the ball out of danger.
The same player shot from behind the penalty area two minutes later, and it was not a bad attempt at all. Nita had to hit the ball to the corner. AS took the initiative over the game during these minutes.
Monaco could go into a lead during the additional time of the first half. Golovin sent a nice shot right under the post, but Florin Nita showed his quality again. The first half finished 0-0.
Volland finished a fast action of AS in the 48th minute when he shot from the side. Nita was careful about this attempt. Monaco had a hopeful chance after the following corner-kick but one of Monaco's players did not hit the ball as he imagined and sent it out of the pitch.
AS showed a nice action two minutes later. Volland found running Gelson who decided for a shot from a difficult angle while the Romanian goalkeeper did not expect that, 1-0.
Ben Yedder was waiting in the penalty area for coming Golovin. Russian offensive player received the ball and did not miss a huge opportunity in the 55th minute. Florin Nita did not have any chance, 2-0.
Diatta wanted to score another goal for AS in the 69th minute. Nita had to tackle his dangerous shot.
Nübel made another mistake in the 78th minute. Sparta successfully attacked Monaco's defense and received the ball. Pavelka sent a great pass to Karlsson who scored the first goal for Sparta in this two legged-tie, 2-1.
Diop showed a beautiful individual performance three minutes later. He went easily through Panák and did not get any chance to Nita, 3-1.
Monaco controlled the rest of the game and won this match 3-1. Sparta is knocked out of Champions League. However, Spartans will continue their journey in the group stage of Europa League.
