Memory of the Spartan Nation

Let us preserve the stories of Sparta’s witnesses.

Sparta is eternal. The memories of trophies, great victories and unforgettable moments live on from generation to generation. We want the same to be true of the people who shaped Sparta, their lives and their memories. We want Sparta’s story to remain part of the story of this country. That is why AC Sparta Praha has joined forces with Memory of Nations.
Because Spartans have never fought only on the pitch, and never only for the club colours. Some fought for their country. Others fought for their own lives, or for the lives of their families. Some prevailed. Others paid the highest price.
Some were forced out of Sparta and Letná by the Nazis. Others by the Communist regime. Some helped save Sparta. For others, Sparta became a source of strength, refuge or salvation.
Every one of these stories belongs to the Memory of the Spartan Nation.
Together, we want to preserve them, share them and make sure they are never forgotten.

What is Memory of Nations?

Memory of Nations is an extensive collection of testimonies from people who witnessed major events of the 20th century. It has been publicly accessible online since 2008.
The project is run by the non-profit organisation Post Bellum in cooperation with Czech Radio, the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and other partners.

WHAT IS OUR PROJECT ABOUT?

  1. We seek out and preserve Sparta’s memories

We seek out and record the stories of people whose memories deserve to be preserved.

  2. We support the work of Memory of Nations

We want to help Memory of Nations continue recording, processing and preserving interviews with witnesses for future generations, including those connected with Sparta.

  3. We share stories and learn together with you

Through exhibitions, videos and other joint activities, we make history accessible to the public and bring these stories to life.

“I’m very proud of Sparta for launching this project and joining forces with Memory of Nations to reflect on people’s lives and on the history we can learn so much from. Because only by understanding our past can we move forward.”

“I started playing for Sparta as a young boy in 1970, and the club has been a natural part of my life ever since. Looking back after all these years, you realise that Sparta is not just about matches and results. Above all, it is about people and their memories. That is why Sparta’s partnership with Memory of Nations makes so much sense to me. Together, we can preserve stories that might otherwise remain only in the memories of those who lived through them.”
