It was the first game for Sparta for Tomáš Ujfaluši and Lukáš Mareček. While the first one went off the field after an hour of play, Mareček scored the only goal of the game to secure a 1-0 win over the Slovak champions.
Sparta were missing eight players due to their national team duty, while other five players were missing due to health issues. Players from the wider roster got their chance, as well as a number of young players from the club’s academy.
From the very first minute it was obvious Sparta were the team to set the pace of the game. However, Čermák missed his first two chances and Bednář only hit the crossbar with a header.
Slovan were barely getting close to Sparta’s box and so it was the home side to open the score. Dočkal crossed the ball from left and Mareček headed it in to score his first goal in the Sparta jersey.
Slovan’s goalkeeper saved the biggest chance of the second half, when Konaté only hit him from a breakaway. Bednář shot it just wide from a similar situation and when Čech made a great save after Meszaroš’s effort on the other side, Sparta defeated Slovan Bratislava 1-0.
