Awer Mabil joins Sparta
Sparta's fourth winter signing is Australian national team player Awer Mabil. The 27-year-old midfielder comes to Letná on loan with an option from the Spanish La Liga, where he played for Cádiz.
“Awer is an attacking winger, a hard-working player who can play one-on-one. He has experience in international matches, having played both in the jersey of the national team of Australia and in UEFA competitions. He is a team player with a winning mentality. The advantage is that the coach knows him well because they spent some time together in Midtjylland," said Sparta's sports director Tomáš Rosický.
Awer Mabil was born in Kenya but plays internationally for Australia, where he settled with his family when he was ten years old. He also appeared in the national team jersey at the last world championship in Qatar, where he played in two matches. He has played 31 matches in the national team and scored eight goals.
He gained his first experience in professional football at Campbelltown City. His good performances soon earned him a move to Adelaide United, where he spent three seasons.
His next steps led to Midtjylland, where after some time he became an important part of the team. First he helped win the Danish Cup and later also the championship title.
He also made 15 Champions League appearances for Midtjylland, scoring three goals and providing one assist. He made another 10 starts in the Europa League.
In the Danish club, he also met the current coaching staff of Sparta, with whom he will now continue the successful cooperation from previous years.
In February last year, he went on loan to Kasımpasa. After the end of the Turkish period, he transferred to Cádiz, where he did not get many chances, so he decided to change the environment.
Awer, welcome to Sparta!
