Danish centre back arrives on loan from Galatasaray

There is a new Dane in town. The 23-year-old Mathias Ross joins Peter Vindahl, Asger Sørensen or the head coach Lars Friis. Sparta have snapped up the centre back from Galatasaray on a season-long loan, with an option to make the move permanent.
“Mathias is a player with very good physical parameters, in this respect he will complement our defensive lineup. Mathias has been coached by Lars for some time, so he knows his abilities and character,” says sporting director of AC Sparta Praha Tomáš Rosický. “We are happy to give the head coach another option for setting up the defence. We have a challenging first part of the season ahead of us, in which we will play thirteen games.”
Mathias is a product of Aalborg youth academy. He made his senior debut in the Danish league at the age of seventeen. It's no surprise that he also represented Denmark in youth national teams.
In the 2019/20 season, Mathias fully established himself in the A-team's starting line-up. Aalborg finished fifth in the season and reached the domestic cup final. Mathias' goal was decisive in the victory over Copenhagen in the quarterfinal. However, Aalborg failed to make the last step, losing 0:2 to Sönderjyske.
Mathias spent the next two seasons gaining experience in Denmark. Certain Lars Friis was also counting on him in his starting eleven. The current head coach of Sparta took over Aalborg in March 2022 and he named Mathias captain of his side for a few matches.
By then, Mathias had already been lured by other European clubs. At the beginning of the 2022/23 season, the Aalborg academy graduate decided to make a move to Galatasaray. He appeared in the opening two rounds of the Turkish Cup and managed to score a goal. However, partly due to injury, he hasn’t played once in the top flight.
Seeking a fresh opportunity, Mathias spent the last season on loan at the Dutch team NEC Nijmegen. He scored two goals in twenty-one league games, both were headers. For the second time in his career, he also reached the domestic cup final with his team. Unfortunately for Mathias, it was Dávid Hancko’s Feyenoord who won the cup.
Hej, Mathias, welcome to Sparta! We wish you the best of luck!
