Twenty-five-year-old right-back Oliver Sonne will spend the remainder of the current season on loan at Sparta. A contracted Burnley player joined the English club at the end of 2024 from Danish side Silkeborg and now moves to Letná. Welcome to Sparta, Oliver!
“Oliver Sonne is a right-back with valuable experience from English football. We are bringing in a player who meets our demands for intensity, dynamism and attacking courage, while also being very disciplined defensively. We believe that thanks to his footballing quality, mentality and character, he will fit well into the Sparta environment and become an important part of the team. He is a player at an ideal age who can help us both in domestic competitions and in Europe,” says sporting director Tomáš Rosický.
Born in Herfølge, Sonne developed as a footballer in nearby Köge, from where he moved to Copenhagen in January 2018. At the U19 level of Denmark’s most successful club, he featured not only as a full-back but also in midfield. After a season and a half, he returned to Köge, where he gained experience in senior football in the second-highest division.
In July 2021, Sonne transferred to Silkeborg. Although he did not have a stable place in the starting lineup during his first season on the Jutland peninsula, the team finished an impressive third in the league. Following elimination in the Europa League qualifiers, Silkeborg went on to play in the Conference League group stage. It was then that Sonne firmly established himself in the starting eleven, featuring in matches against West Ham and Anderlecht.
His performances did not go unnoticed by national team coaches, though not the Danish ones. Thanks to his grandmother’s Peruvian roots, Sonne decided to represent Peru in 2023. Under head coach Jorge Fossati, he once again appeared in a midfield role and, together with Joao Grimaldo, took part in the 2024 Copa América, where Peru failed to advance from the group stage.
Before departing for the South American tournament, Sonne celebrated his greatest club success to date with Silkeborg, lifting the domestic cup. In the final against Aarhus, he scored the decisive and only goal of the match.
In the autumn of 2024, Sonne recorded three goals and four assists in 16 league appearances, paving the way for the next step in his career. During the winter break, he transferred to Burnley, who were competing at the top of the Championship. The Turf Moor side ultimately secured direct promotion to the Premier League, with the Peruvian international making five competitive appearances in the spring.
Sonne began the current season in the starting lineup away at Tottenham and later scored in an August EFL Cup match against Derby. However, he fell out of the rotation during the autumn and returned to action only in mid-December, when he netted his second goal for Burnley, this time against Fulham. The owner of seven Premier League appearances now arrives at Letná.
Oliver, welcome! We look forward to seeing you perform in our jersey.
