Scottish midfielder Andy Irving quickly earned his place in the starting line-up after joining the club and helped Sparta to a strong start to the spring part of the season. In an in-depth interview, he speaks about his first weeks at Letná, adapting to a new style of play, and the differences between the Czech top flight and the Premier League.
Andy, we are speaking just after training. How did it go today?
Training was good. It was quite a long session, a proper full workout with both technical and tactical elements. I really enjoyed it.
What are your impressions after your first few weeks at Sparta?
Honestly, I do not even know where to start. My feelings are fantastic. I am really enjoying the whole environment and the way the team is set up. I have felt very comfortable here from the very beginning. Prague is a beautiful city as well. At the weekend, I experienced Letná for the first time, which I had really been looking forward to, and it exceeded my expectations. I had heard a lot about the fans and the atmosphere, and it was truly amazing.
You mentioned the city. Have you managed to visit places other than Strahov and Letná?
Yes, quite a few already. I live with my girlfriend, so we go out a lot, for walks, to cafés and restaurants, and so on. Last weekend my family came over too, so we all explored the city together. We visited the castle and other parts of Prague. It is beautiful here. My friends had always told me Prague was stunning. When I told them I was signing for Sparta, they were thrilled.
What about relationships in the dressing room? Is there someone you spend the most time with?
I think I get on well with everyone. There is a great vibe in the squad. We joke around and play different games. Darts are quite popular at the moment, especially among the Scandinavians. I would not single out just one name, but there are plenty of players I get along with really well. I also have a little piece of home here with Ian and Jack, which is nice. Everyone at the club is very friendly, and that made it incredibly easy to settle in.
