“Christian is a top-class specialist with a clear methodology, while also being uncompromising and demanding. He returns to us with new experience from the German league, knows our environment and can get straight to work. At this stage of the season, we need to get every detail of our preparation right, and I believe Christian will make a significant contribution in that regard. I’m glad to have him back,” says sporting director Tomáš Rosický.
Clarup spent nine years as Head of Physical Performance at Midtjylland before moving to Sparta in July 2022. Brian Priske brought him into his coaching staff, having already worked with him at the four-time Danish champions. Less than a year later, the pair lifted the Czech league title together.
In October 2023, Brian Priske, Lars Friis and Christian Clarup all signed new contracts. The Danish coaching staff subsequently led Sparta to another league title, victory in the domestic cup and a place in the UEFA Europa League round of 16. Further recognition of Clarup’s quality work came with his involvement with the Danish national team during the European Championship in Germany.
After a change in the head coach position, Clarup remained part of Friis’ coaching staff and was therefore also there for Sparta’s return to the UEFA Champions League league phase. At the end of the season, however, he answered the call from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, where he worked until March 2026.
Christian is now back to write another successful chapter of his time at Sparta... “I’m returning to an environment that I have a lot of memories of and know very well. I believe that will be an advantage, as I don’t need much time to settle in and can get straight to work. I’m happy to be back at Sparta and want to do my part to help improve the team’s results,” says the returning Head of Physical Performance.
