First interview with assistant coach Lars Friis

Share

Lars Friis became the newest member of the coaching staff. Here you can read the first interview with Brian Priske´s assistant in Sparta.
Lars, first of all, tell us why have you chosen Sparta.
Sparta is a very big club and when you look into history you can see that it's a great club with a lot of ambitions. The aim here is to win and I like that. All the surroundings and the setup here are really good, you’ve got here everything that is needed for success. Now it's only to perform.
You already worked with Brian and Christian in Midtjylland. So could we say that you are coming to a familiar environment?
Yes, we have, but actually, it's been seven years since we cooperated together, it was back in the day. Of course, we know each other and we have a shared background, so some things will be easier to set in. It totally makes sense and it is better to build on a relationship than start from zero.
Your coaching career took you to the UK where you were part of Brentford. Can you benefit from this foreign experience in Sparta?
I think that no matter where you're from, when you have been abroad and have that experience, you can benefit from it. One thing is to live abroad another thing is to deal with different lifestyles, different styles of play, and different cultures. On my journeys, I got a lot of tools to do the job, and the experience to live abroad that's a big one as well.
How would you describe yourself as a coach?
I would say about myself, that my passion is football and I think passion no matter what you do is really important. Because on the bad days you have a good opportunity to get something out of it. It is your passion I like to work with, the whole human being. I really believe that one thing is the player and another thing is the person. If the person doesn’t let's say perform, it's difficult to see the player. At the same time if the person grows you'll see the player grow as well. This is my pure belief in how to work with people. I have been a head coach myself, and I've been an assistant coach, so no matter what role I am in, I really love when you are working on something and you can see the outcome on match days. If it works or does not work. I'm a little bit nerdy in the whole process, especially in the offensive part which I also dig into here, so I really look forward to that.
Have you and Brian already managed to divide your roles in the training process?
Brian is the head coach and I'm here to support him, the staff, and of course to support the players. That's my aim for the job. Then one of my things is having a deeper look into the offensive part when we're in position. It doesn't mean that we won’t share our opinions, of course, we will, but in general, this is my main expertise.
Did you see any matches that Sparta played this season?
I have seen clips from Wyscout and the friendly game against Žilina. That's basically it for the moment. I will use my time from now on and until we meet up in January to dig into the games, the players, get a good opinion of who they are and what we are capable of.
Have you ever visited Prague?
I really love the city I have only been here once, but it really got me. It was on a scouting mission, back then when I was at Brentford. I've been here to watch some players, but I have never been here on a vacation and actually never played against any team from Prague. So I haven’t seen much, but I really look forward to digging into the city and the whole environment around Prague.
