Jakub Pešek returned to Sparta, the club where he grew up, in 2021. Now, three and a half years later, the two-time league champion and domestic cup winner is embarking on a new challenge with the Polish side KS Wieczysta Krakow.
Jakub Pešek returned back to Letná after stints at České Budějovice and Liberec. “I always wanted to return, and I’m glad it worked out,” said the member of the national team squad for the 2021 European Championship upon his transfer.
Right at the beginning of his tenure, Pešek played a significant role in advancing from the second qualifying round of the Champions League. In the home leg against Rapid Vienna, he was first fouled in the penalty area, leading to a goal by Moberg Karlsson. Nine minutes before the end, the fresh signing secured Sparta’s victory by sending Ladislav Krejčí’s cross into the net.
In sixteen league matches during the autumn, Pešek recorded six goals and the same number of assists. Shortly after the winter break, Sparta faced Slavia in the domestic cup quarterfinals. Following a quick counterattack, Pešek crowned the situation with a beautiful goal.
At the start of the 2022/23 season, Pešek was a regular starter under Brian Priske. However, in the fourth-round match against Boleslav, he suffered an unfortunate injury and subsequently had to undergo ACL surgery. His recovery sidelined him for the entire season, which ended with the consolation of celebrating the championship title.
After ten months of enforced absence, Pešek returned to the pitch. He played one half in a friendly match against Jihlava. “I had been ready for some time, but we gave my return a bit more time,” the returning player shared after the match. “I’m handling the training load well and feel really great.”
Pešek kicked off the 2023/24 season with an assist for Victor Olatunji’s goal, which secured victory over Dinamo Zagreb and a spot in the Europa League group stage. Over the past league season, Pešek played 20 matches, contributing two goals and one assist to Sparta’s title defense. He also celebrated a domestic cup victory after two years.
At the start of the current season, Pešek fulfilled another major football dream alongside his teammates and the entire Sparta community. After 19 long years, Sparta advanced to the Champions League. Pešek celebrated Matěj Ryneš’ crucial goal against Malmö right on the pitch. In the group stage of the Champions League, the 31-year-old midfielder made two appearances.
Péša, thank you for everything! We wish you all the best!
